Social Housing Act


This Law contains the general principles applicable to social housing which requires the national, provincial and local spheres of government and social housing institutions to ensure that their respective housing programmes are responsive to local housing demands and that special priority is given to the needs of all vulnerable groups.

Chapter 2 contains the roles and responsibilities of the; national and local government as well as for other role players. This document also establishes the Social Housing Regulatory Authority which is mandated to regulate all social housing institutions obtaining or having obtained public funds. Finally, this Act mandates social housing institutions to promote the creation of quality living environments for low income residents as well as re-invest operational surpluses generated as a result of funding, provided in terms of the social housing programme, in further approved projects.
